How Purple Shampoo Works

Purple shampoos are used to fight brassiness on blonde, gray and silver hair in between salon visits. They contain violet pigments which counteract and neutralize unwanted yellow tones, thereby making the hair's tone cooler. They work well because purple is the opposite of yellow on the colour wheel. 

Purple conditioners have also become popular as they continue the toning process and add moisture to the hair. In some cases, purple conditioners strengthen the hair as well. For customers who want deep conditioning (and in some cases strengthening and repair), purple masks are also available. Both purple conditioners and purple masks work the same way as purple shampoos with their violet pigmentation.

Purple shampoos (and their corresponding conditioners and masks) have become very popular over the past few years and almost all of our professional brands have them. Remember, you should also follow the specific directions on your shampoo, conditioner and hair masks because if you leave it on for too long, or if you use it too often, you may "overtone" and have purple hair instead of the shiny, cool blonde you are looking for.

We live in Atlantic Canada so we are used to excessive moisture in the air, especially in the summer! When it's humid outside, our hair soaks it all up and that's why we experience extra frizz, especially if we have curly, wavy or even slightly damaged hair.  

Frizz fighting shampoo and conditioner are great first steps to fight frizz. Heat protectors work by creating a barrier around your strands to protect from heat damage and to prevent moisture loss. The result is less breakage, split ends and dryness.

Clarifying shampoos are not just for swimmers! Not only do they work well to remove chlorine from the hair after some time in a pool, they remove build up that occurs from styling products, mineral deposits and excess oils. For most people, we recommend using a good clarifying shampoo about once a month. Our go-to's include Moroccanoil Clarifying Shampoo, Redken Hair Cleansing Cream, K18 Peptide Prep Detox Shampoo and KMS Head Remedy Shampoo. We love these because they work well and they are all colour safe. That's one thing you need to be aware of before you use deep cleansing clarifying shampoo. Always check the label. If it does not specifically say it is colour safe, you should look for another if you have colour treated hair.
